Setup
for the Icom 756 Pro III

Transceiver
settings
When
setting up most new DSP transceivers, there is usually an internal
EQ that must be considered when setting up any external audio
gear. In the case of the Pro III there is in fact a small section
that has EQ type settings.
First
thing to do is you must make sure that you press the last
button on the row just to the left of the screen until it reads
comp off wide. When you want the rig to sound its best audio ways,
you must always have the rig in this general mode, wide with the
compressor off.
Then
press the EXIT/SET button until you get the mini display on the
screen and then hold the EXIT/SET button until the set menu comes
up. Press F-1 to get the level set screen up. Press F-1 again
until you get to the TX Tone controls. Default for both the Bass
and Treble sliders is 0. If you are not going to put external EQ
equipment on the rig, adjust these sliders while listening to the
monitor until it sounds as you like. Press F-2 now until you get
to SSB TBW (Wide) L and set that to 100 by rotating the main
tuning dial. Press F-2 one more time and adjust SSB TBW (High) H
to 2900 by rotating the main tuning dial again. The rig will now
be set for its maximum bandpass of 2.8Khz in the wide mode as set
above. Do the same thing to set the medium and narrow settings as
you like.
Now
press the EXIT/SET button to get the mini display up and then
press the Filter button for about 1 second until there is a
picture of a filter spread. Continue to press the filter button
until the Fil1 is selected. While pushing the BW button (F-1) turn
the main tuning dial until the Fil1 says 3.6K. Now the radio is
setup for as wide as it will go. Now if you are not going
to have external audio gear connected, you are ready to go. You
may want to go back and adjust the internal EQ Bass and Treble
sliders again to touch it up a little.
External
audio gear
As
I said in BACKGROUND, I will only describe the audio gear I use on
the Pro III, not some gear you may want to use. In that case you
are on your own. The main audio gear I use for the Pro III is the
Behringer 2496. A description of how to use this particular device
is on other parts of this page and I am not going to duplicate
that write up here. I use the GEQ, PEQ, DEQ, and DYN. Of course I
use the other sections of the 2496 but I will not talk about them
here as again that would be redundant.
Here is my setup
for the Pro III. I use the GEQ settings with these setup. The
Freq. are not in order but in the order I added them when I was
getting the sound I wanted.

The
DYN is the downward expander and has to be set as per your
microphone and the amount of ambient noise in your shack. My own
settings are Gain = 0.0, Threshold = -27 db, Ratio = 1:2:5. On the
second page the parameters are as follows: Attack = 3.91, Release
= 20.0.
