A Shameless Tribute to ME Larry M. Wassman
Here is the great Puyallup High School football player. Wasn't I fearsome? Wish I had that much hair today and was that thin. They were always trying to get me to be a little heaver. Finally I have my anorexia under full control. My kids think we played with leather helmets in those days but actually I can remember when face masks first came out. I lost one tooth in the front playing football and broke other bones, but loved every minute of it.
Please excuse the quality of these football pictures as they were taken out of old newspapers that I have saved. There I am number 10 running back for the team. I did not play football my senior year of High School because I wanted to be a doctor and concentrated on getting my grades up. I did get a chance to play blocking dummy in college but quickly found out that a 5 foot 9 inch 155 pound boy like me was not going to make it in college football, and quite to do other things that were more productive for me.
After I graduated from Puyallup High School, I was offered a scholarship for music and football at Washington State University. I know that is a funny combination. Each male student was expected to take ROTC training at the University. I took air science and kind of enjoyed it. Here is a picture of me in my uniform. I considered going all the way and graduating from the program, but got interested in computers and just did my one year. Kind of glad I dropped out as the Viet Nam was started to heat up after that, and I would have went into the Air Force as a 2nd lieutenant and possible a pilot. Some of the guys who I know did just that and one of my friends was shot down and was never found. May have happened to me.
Jackie and I in the early 70's. We already had our three girls and I was a manager by now. Jackie hates this picture of her, but it is one of the few I have with her hair long. As you can see my hair was on its way out and I was getting fatter. A life long battle for me.
Shooting ahead now to the 90's and I was nearing retirement when this picture was taken. One of the periods in my life where my weight was under control.
About 1996 this picture of me and my oldest grandson, Saul was taken. I had retired by now and was having fun traveling, cruising, and just enjoying my grandkids. My daughter made a little black leather coat for Saul, so he could be like grandpa.
By now hair was in full retreat, but I was in good shape. Did a lot of bicycling and running. Used to do a minimum of 3 miles jogging each day, some days 6 miles. I did mountain biking and Jackie and I used to go all over the Northwest to mountain bike some of the best trails. I would love to get back into the shape I was in this picture, but I have a long long way to go.
Well here I am today in January of 2004. A lot of water over the bridge and hopefully a long way to go. I am ashamed sometimes to think how lucky I have been and how blessed to have had the opportunities and experiences that I have had. My life has been so easy so far with very few real problems. I have done a lot of things I wish I did not do and could do over. But all in all I am happy with my life and feel that I have contributed in maybe a little way to making this world a better place. Nothing big, but I am satisfied. The tee shirt says, " If you can't run with the Big Dogs, stay on the Porch. " Well I don't think I have ran with the big dogs, but have met governors, senators, and other famous people and have learned that these big dogs and just like me. They have the same problems fears and challenges that I have faced. The only thing that separates me from them, in many ways was just luck. I was just as smart and driven, but did not take advantage of some opportunities that they did. My advise to anyone in the world is to never give up on your dreams. Never wash yourself out. Don't stop working for your dreams until they say you have got to leave the building or are taken to the other side of the rainbow.
Back to the beginning of this bragging tribute to me.
